Every June Pittsburgh's Mattress Factory Museum holds it's annual fundraiser in the form of an Urban Garden
Party, and each year there is a different theme to the event. The 2011 version celebrated From Hollywood to Paradise.
An unique part of the event each year is an auction of original artwork based on a theme related object that the museum has chosen for each artist to work with. Here's a collection of my art from some other garden parties.

This year each artist was given a 12" plastic replica of the Oscar. I must have spent a week wondering what to do with
that object until, I decided to boycott it all together in favor of a drawing of Sacheen Littlefeather.

Sacheen Littlefeather is a Native American activist who donned Apache dress and presented a speech on behalf of actor Marlon Brando, for his performance in The Godfather, when he boycotted the 45th Academy Awards ceremony on March 27, 1973, in protest of the treatment of Native Americans by the film industry.

I have created a very limited edition of 10, each print signed, numbered and printed with archival inks on 13" x 19" semi-matt archival paper.

A Winter Hymnal (Songs For My Father)

A compilation of nine photographs documenting a series of rituals performed in my garden this past winter

in memory of my father Elmer Pohl, who died on December 22, 2009.

A Winter Hymnal (Songs for My Father) is my contribution to a new group show called Responding, which

opens this Friday April 16 at Future Tenant and runs through May 15. Responding is curated by Anna Mikolay.

In November of 2006 I buried my 13 year old dog Sherman under an old lilac tree in the back yard behind

my home. Soon after, I began to use his burial site as a place to perform puja (devotional ritual) ceremonies.

This personally sacred site has become for me a place to reflect upon love and reverence, memory, loss, time

and the nature of decay.

Ganesh is the fifth installment in my continuing series (since 2001) of site specific wall drawings created utilizing a Spirograph, the 1960's drawing toy for children.

Ganesh (or Ganesha), is the beloved Hindu God with the head of an elephant (representing the Atman or soul), and a body in human form. Ganesh is known as The Lord of Beginnings, The Lord of Success and The Remover of Obstacles. He is one of the five primary Hindu deities, along with Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and Durga. The first action in almost all Hindu pujas (devotional rituals) is to honor Ganesh.

I first started working with the Spirograph in 2001, and quickly discovered it's potential as a tool for meditative, ritualistic drawing practices. Around that time I also began a music project to facilitate my meditation and yoga practice, based on the concept(s) of mantra. I called it Loop Yoga. Loop Yoga utilizes sampled music in the creation of repetitious sound currents with the intention of deeply connecting to the divinity encased within a sound structure. Together I have dubbed these (drawing and sound) investigations The Loop Yoga Project. The ephemeral, mutable and repetitive elements of this work points towards the cyclical nature of life. I attempt to illustrate the idea that life is ultimately a spiritual process through which one can discover a deeper union with (a) timeless reality.

A site specific drawing made directly on the walls of the gallery. The drawing itself (made with the use of a spirograph, the 1960's art making device for children) contains thousands of various small circles representing the Buddha as a formless form. The first phase of the drawing was completed in four days, and was continued over a period of 3 months.

In this particular piece, the temporary nature of the work relates to Buddhist concepts of impermanence and non-attachment, referencing the sand mandalas created by Tibetan Buddhist monks which are meticulously created over a short period of time and then swept up and dispersed into a flowing river or stream.

At the completion of the show the Buddha drawing was washed away.

White House Buddha (Uprising), 2001

Pittsburgh artist, musician and illustrator David Pohl created this piece shortly after September 11. Originally designed to be a sequential animation piece for a website, White House Buddha expresses the need for people to turn inward and toward a path of spirituality in the wake of the terrorist attacks. A popular element in Pohl’s work, the Buddha conveys the artist’s desire to see America chart a course of peace and caution in the aftermath of September 11.
